Coach - Thushan De Silva
Manager - Phyllis Chan

Click "Read more" below for a full Team BC event summary from Manager, Phyllis Chan.
At 6:20pm Pacific Time on January 10th, 2013, Team BC left the beautiful city of Vancouver to head to Saskatoon for the Western Canada Team Championship. Nothing could have prepared the team for their late night arrival in the land of snow. The team was bombarded by cold winds and snow as we walked around the deserted airport rental lot searching for our designated cars. Everyone was very tired by the
time we were able to retire to our rooms at the Ramada.
The next day proceeded smoothly as everyone adjusted to the life of moving as a pack. Team BC, renamed Team Bacon due to the tantalizing smell of bacon wafting from the kitchen, played Manitoba in the afternoon and pulled off an astounding win of 14-0. On Saturday morning, the team was up and awake for their early match against Alberta at 9am. The team lost the tie with the close score of 6-8. Later that afternoon, they triumphed over Saskatchewan and qualified to replay Alberta for the gold on Sunday.
On day of the team finals, things were heating up between Alberta and Team Bacon (BC). Team cheers of 'Do it for the bacon!' roused those on the court to play harder than they have ever played before. Unfortunately despite everyone's best efforts, Team Bacon lost to Alberta with a score of 10-4 with many matches playing to three sets. Team BC was awarded silver for their hard work.
Thushan De Silva, coach of the team, would like to commend all of the players for their spirit and is very proud of everyone's performance. He would also like to thank the players' coaches and parents for their
continued support and Phyllis Chan (myself), manager, for her work this weekend.
Highlights of the weekend include John Tam and Jodi Fei's singles matches against Alberta. Whether they were leading or a few points behind, they never stopped fighting for themselves and the team. I also want to praise Ruiqi He and Jodi Fei's fantastically synchronized warcry for doubles. It was absolutely amazing to see the normally quiet and reserved Ruiqi step up her game. I hope she will continue to do so in the future. Not to be outdone, Dora Chien, Steven Lu, and Jasmine Li were the steady anchors of the team with their consistent performance. Throughout the weekend, they provided the team with crucial points that guaranteed at least a silver for BC. Lastly but not the least, Jeffrey So and Antonio Li played very well against the top two players in Alberta and must be credited with the best attitude and humour on and off the court.
This weekend has been full of ups and downs and the team has stuck together the entire time. Throughout the weekend, many memories and friendships have been made. Poor Antonio will be called 'Fat Tony' by me for a while and I will continue to hold a grudge against Jeffrey So for lying to me during Big 2. Feel free to ask anyone from the team about their stories and their experiences from representing BC at the Western Canada Team Championship. I am sure their stories will make you laugh at least once. To the team, take care and keep training hard.
Until next time,
Phyllis Chan

Team BC Victorious at Western Canadian Team Championships
January 16, 2012

Team BC at Western Canada Team Championships, January 13, 14, & 15, 2012, Winnipeg Winter Club, Manitoba.
BC was victorious in the U14/U16 combined team event defeating Alberta, in the Gold Medal Match.
Representing BC in the U14's were Jeffrey So, Jack Lin, Kylie Cheng, Jenna Wong, and Samantha Zheng. The U16 team members were Christie Choy, Jasmine Li, James Ho and Calvin Che! The coach was Harry Pan from Ace Badminton Club and the manager was Cindy Simpson.
The format of the event was round robin with 2 singles in each age category for males and females. The singles event was ranked 1 and 2 and once we declared our singles players, we had to stay with that. The events involving females we were able to change in the U14 as we had 3 players.
The qualifying event was a full round robin and we easily defeated Manitoba 2, Manitoba 1 and Saskatchewan with strong performances by all including our youngest player Samantha Zheng who won all of her matches in singles, doubles and mixed.
On Saturday afternoon, our fourth tie of the event, we played Alberta. By this time, travel, change of climate, different food and time began to catch up to us. However, the U14's despite strong play and close losses ended the tie 3 - 4. The U16's knew they had to work hard and did so winning the tie 4 - 3 which meant that we were tied with Alberta overall 7 - 7 and into the Sunday gold medal match.
We had a pretty restful remainder of the day and on Sunday am, they were ready to go.
The format is such that two events were played at one time. Jeffrey So and Jack Lin set us up for the start of success! Although Jeffrey had lost to Byron Holcek of AB in singles the day before, he was on fire, focussed and fought to win his three game match. On the next court was Jack Lin working hard for every point and although he lost the match 20-22 in the second game he demonstrated a fighting spirit which carried over to the girls. Kylie Cheng literally flew about the court defeating her opponent. Jenna had a very tall opponent in Monica Cowper to whom she had lost the previous day. In this round, Jenna was on task and business like. She won in the third game. After the match, she said that was the best she had played and she surprised herself as to how well she moved about the court!
Next the U16 men took to the courts. Calvin Che in our #1 position played Ty Lindeman. On Saturday, Calvin lost to Ty in three. Sunday was a different story, Calvin came out following his game plan and won in two. Meanwhile on the next court, James was quickly winning his match. These two also set the tone for the U16's and the team. The women took to the courts for their singles. Jamine Li had a tough match with Alberta's no. 1 and although she lost both matches her scores, movement and shots were much better on Sunday. Christie Choy easily won her singles as well.
The doubles were next. The U14 team of Jeffrey and Jack avenged their Saturday loss to Alberta with a strong win over the same team. The girl's team repeated their win from the day before. The U16 girls of Christie and Jasmine had lost a three game tough match the day prior but on Saturday, they were victorious in another three game match pulling out the win 22- 20 in the third! The U16 boys did not fare as well, losing to the team they had defeated the day before in three in a very close match.
Onto the mixed! One of the longest matches on Saturday was the U16 mixed that Kylie Cheng and Jeffrey So played against AB prevailing in three, 21 - 17. Sunday was a different story. This focussed confident pair, playing a combination of mixed and doubles, defeated the same Alberta pair convincingly. The U16 team of Christie Choy and James Ho had a very tough match on Saturday winning 25 - 23, 21 - 16 and repeated the win on Sunday with similar scores of 21 - 15, 23 - 21.
We finished the event with a team score of 11 - 3. Broken down the contribution to the final medal results were U14, 6 - 1 and U16, 5 - 2.
This event was well run by Ryan Giesbrecht, the Executive Director of the Manitoba Badminton Association and hosted by Archie Chawla and the Winnipeg Winter Club.
Thanks to all the parents who welcomed us home yesterday at YVR with hugs, kisses, flowers and candy!
Coach Harry Pan, who did a wonderful job of coaching the players, and I were very proud of the way our players behaved, represented our province and performed the whole weekend!

Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Simpson

Report on the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games
September 22, 2011
The Games were held in Kamloops from August 9th to August 14th. Badminton was scheduled during the week of August 11th – 14th. The Kamloops Host Society, the City of Kamloops, worked extremely hard for 4 years to ensure that we all had the best possible experience at the Games. And let us not forget to mention the volunteers who worked tirelessly to help achieve this goal.
A total of 8 teams participated from the Western Provinces and Territories, with 5 men and 5 women from each team. The competition format was Round Robin – head to head results “tie format”, followed by finals.
We are very proud of our team for winning the gold medal. This would not have been possible without the self-motivation, dedication, and team spirit of our players. Clinton Wong and Christin Tsai, our Team Captains, were instrumental in leading our team to victory. Clinton and Christin were selected to carry the BC flag at the Closing Ceremonies, and to receive the Western Canada Summer Games Cup which Team BC won for the 10th consecutive time. A special mention here of you, Phil Weier, Julia Chen (VP High Performance), and Ken Thiesen, for the hours of preparatory work and support. I would like to make mention here of the players and recognize the efforts of their personal high performance coaches who are continuing to work towards their long-term development:
Clinton Wong – Hollyburn – Coaches Julia Chen and Alex Wong
Sam Dunner – VLTBC – Coach Ram Nayyar and Thushan De Silva
Christin Tsai/Nathan Choi/Benny Lin/Eileen Wong/Vanora Lo – ClearOne – Coaches Darryl Yung, Sandiarto, and Ronne Runtulalo
Candice Ip – Victoria – Coach Keith Anton
Katrina Cheng – Ace – Coach Harry Pan
Duncan Yao – VRC – Coaches Calvin Holoboff and Ximing Yao
My participation as Coach at the Games, close on the heels of the Canada Winter Games, has been very challenging and gratifying. I would like to thank the Province of BC through the Team BC Program, Board and Staff of Badminton BC, Team Manager Lisa Davison, Mission Staffer Cindy Simpson, Team BC Mental Performance Consultant Lauren Jones, Chef de Mission Irene Schell, Assistant Chef Bruce Wasylik, Performance Director Marc Bowles, and especially the athletes for the opportunity to help lead Team BC Badminton to victory at these Games.

Report on 2011 Canada Winter Games - Badminton
June 2, 2011
The Canada Winter Games is one of only a few key multi-sport games opportunities for athletes to experience before they strive to reach the podium at the ultimate multi-sport games: The Olympics!
The more opportunities that athletes have to experience the unique (and challenging) aspects of multi-sport games, starting with the first games on the athlete pathway - the BC Winter Games - the greater their chance to succeed at the highest level, which is the goal of High Performance athlete development. As such, the 2011 Canada Winter Games will help shape the future success of many of the team members as they move on to higher levels of competition.
Team BC for the 2011 Canada Winter Games was chosen by the High Performance Committee, based on a series of trials starting in August 2010, and concluding in December 2010. The Coach and Manager were recruited through an application process and individual recruitment in 2010.
Team BC was made up of the following:
Phyllis Chan (Team Captain)
Christin Tsai
Vanora Lo
Vivian Yan
Tina Chen
Clinton Wong (Male Captain)

Team BC was also supported by former VP – High Performance Chris Trenholme who served as member of the Team BC Mission Staff assigned to Badminton at the Games in week two. The role of Team BC Mission Staff is to serve as liaison between the team and the overall Team BC and host society operation, ensuring as smooth experience as possible (i.e. transportation, accommodations, food, medical services, etc.). The goal of the mission staff is to insulate the coach, manager and team to allow them to focus on what is most important—practice, rest, recovery, and performance.
This team was a unique mix of some top national level athletes like Phyllis Chan, but also contained many younger players with very promising futures, like Christin Tsai, Nathan Choi, Clinton Wong, Eric Hsu, and even younger players like Duncan Yao, Benny Lin, and Vanora Lo. Many of these players are eligible to compete for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. I predict, based on their performances, that BC can look forward to winning more medals in 2015.
There were many performance highlights from these Games, including the following:
• Silver Medal in the Team Event, defeating Alberta and Quebec along the way, and narrowly losing to Ontario in the final three matches to two.
• Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles, won by Christin Tsai and Nathan Choi
• Silver Medal in Women’s Singles, won by Phyllis Chan
• Bronze Medal in Women’s Singles, won by Christin Tsai
• Fourth Place in Mixed Doubles for Phyllis Chan and Eric Hsu
• Quarterfinal results for Benny Lin and Clinton Wong in Men’s Singles
• Quarterfinal results for Vanora Lo and Vivian Yan in Women’s Doubles
• Quarterfinal results for Duncan Yao and Benny Lin in Men’s Doubles
On a personal note, there were many outstanding examples of team leadership, camaraderie, and Team BC cheer, led by Team Captain Phyllis Chan and Male Captain Clinton Wong, but exemplified by the entire team.
Some interesting human interest highlights include the following:
• My first try at eating lobster at the team dinner at a restaurant in Halifax
• Almost losing my way back from the restaurant in Halifax
• Vanora’s BC Flag Cape and cheering battle with a New Brunswick fan in the team event
• The different team cheers—including pre-team tie, after a match, and during a match once we got to 21 points
• Lisa Davison’s leadership and care for the team
• Team BC rocking the house with its horns, noise makers, sunglasses, and clappers
Feedback for the future
While there were many things that went well with the overall Team BC selection, preparation, and performance for and at the Canada Winter Games, please consider the following items for the 2015 Canada Winter Games and beyond:
• Pool of female athletes was very low from which to choose the team. Consider ways to ensure a greater pool of female athletes for next time that still focuses on the appropriate Long Term Athlete Development Model stage (Train to Compete).
• Coach selection and recruitment was challenging and was concluded much later than anticipated. This has the risk of taking away from the best preparation possible (i.e. the sooner the coach is selected, the sooner he/she can work with the athletes on preparation).
• Greater education and promotion is needed to the Membership on the value and importance of multi-sport games like the Canada Winter Games is for Long Term Athlete Development (see comments above), as well as the importance that Badminton BC places on its participation in this event (i.e. BC Government looks very closely at how well each PSO performs).
• Overall, there needs to be a continued effort to bring together all High Performance coaches in BC so there is greater “buy-in” on Provincial opportunities like the Canada Winter Games and overall High Performance initiatives that bring together all athletes together as Team BC. While there are many great things happening at the club/program level, there does not seem to be much support of an overall Team BC program that unites everyone towards a common goal.
I would like to thank the Province of BC through the Team BC Program, Board and Staff of Badminton BC, Team Manager Lisa Davison, Mission Staffer Chris Trenholme, Team BC Mental Trainer Rob Roy, Chef Ajay Patel, Assistant Chef Judy Joseph, Performance Director Marc Bowles, and especially the athletes for the opportunity to help lead Team BC Badminton at these Games. Thanks to Anna Rice who gave an inspirational talk, and provided the team with a lot of motivation. Thank you to the Personal Coaches Darryl Yung, Ronne Runtalao, and Sandiarto Liauw (Clearone), Calvin Holoboff and Ximing Yao (Vancouver Racquets Club), and Keith Anton (Badminton Victoria) – they have done a splendid job. On my part, I attended their training sessions in Vancouver.
Julia Chen, Phil Weier, and Ken Thiesen are to be commended for their untiring efforts in coordinating all the activities which led to a very successful event.
I have many wonderful memories that will stay with me for a life time.
Respectfully submitted,
Abdul Shaikh, ChPC

High Performance Camp Update - Eligibility
June 10, 2010
As published in our 2010/2011 Team BC Training to Win Program criteria:
Adding Athletes into Program Mid-Season
The High Performance Committee, with input of the athlete’s coach, will consider the in-take of athletes into the program at any time, based on demonstrated ability.
The Level 3 Coach for the athlete must submit a supporting letter requesting that the athlete to be added to the program mid-season.
With the High Performance Camp happening June 28th – July 2nd, 2010 we are inviting coaches to submit any recommendations for athletes not appearing on the list below to be considered for inclusion in the 2010/2011 Team BC Training to Win Program. To avoid the athlete missing out on his/her opportunity to attend the High Performance Camp, the HP Committee will receive any applications (supporting letter from Level 3 coach must be included) prior to the end of business day June 18th, 2010. The HP Committee will reply back to all applications the following week so that the athlete is aware of his/her eligibility to participate in the Camp.
Please email your application (with supporting letter) to Badminton BC Technical Director – Phil Weier: philw@badmintonbc.com by 5:00pm Friday June 18th.

Team BC Training Camp Update and Funding Announcement - High Performance
March 25, 2010
The High Performance Committee (HPC) has decided to postpone its tentatively scheduled Team BC Training Camp in April to take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to bring together our Team BC athletes and coaches with some select world-class international athletes and coaches in late June.
The Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club (VLTBC) and Badminton Canada, in partnership with Badminton BC, will be hosting the 2010 National Team Training Camp, June 26 to July 3.
Badminton BC and its Team BC - Training to Win athletes (and other athletes and coaches, for a fee) will have an opportunity to work with several world-class athletes and coaches during the week.
Details on the camp will be shared with the membership as they progress, including the possible need for Team BC athletes and their families to help billet their fellow Team BC athletes and/or national/international athletes and coaches.
The HPC is committed to ensuring that the Team BC Training Camp will be inclusive of both our 2009/10 Program and 2010/11 athletes, and, as mentioned above, will be open to other athletes and coaches for a fee.
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our members in their planning around the tentatively scheduled April Training Camp, but ask that you share our excitement in the opportunities to be involved with our National Team Camp in June.
The HPC is also excited to announce that, due to the postponement of the camp until next year's program (i.e. June 2010 through May 1, 2011), we have secured up to $5000 in direct athlete funding, based on results of our 2009/10 Team BC - Training to Win athletes at their age-specific 2010 National Championships.
We look forward to updating the membership as we know more.
Sincerely,
Chris Trenholme

2010-2011 Team BC "Training-to-Win" Program Selection Criteria
January 19, 2010
Background
In 2009, based on consultation with the high performance coaches in our province, the High Performance Committee (HPC) developed and implemented the very first “Team BC – Training to Win” program. This program is driven by Badminton Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), and fully supports Badminton Canada’s High Performance Plan, with the goal of developing and supporting athletes in BC that will go on to be supported by Badminton Canada at the National Team level.
The “Team BC – Training to Win” program consisted of selected high performance athletes that fall into four key stages of development in LTAD:
-
Training to Win (T2W) – Open Category/U-23
-
Learning to Win (L2W) – U-23
-
Training to Compete (T2C) – U-19
-
Training to Train (T2T) – U-16
The 2009 “Team BC – Training to Win” program selected athletes based on results from the 2009 Provincial and National Championships. Athletes were invited to join the program in September 2009, with programming continuing until the end of the Badminton BC membership year of May 31, 2010. It was the decision of each athlete whether he/she decided to join the program.
The 2010-2011 Program will begin June 1, 2010 and conclude May 31, 2011.

High Performance Update - Team BC "Training to Win" Program
September 30, 2009
Dear Badminton BC Members:
The Badminton BC High Performance Committee, when designing the High Performance Plan and "Team BC - Training to Win" program, ensured that effective communication, promotion, and education were key objectives, as we believe it's important for our membership to gain a better understanding about the High Performance Committee, its plan, Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), and our partnership with Badminton Canada's High Performance program. To that end, we look forward to keeping you informed as we move along.
Background
The Committee, in its earliest stages, discussed the need to bring back a unified "Team BC" concept to our province that seemed to be lacking. Some of the high performance coaches at the table were part of a Team BC program in days gone by that they believed was of benefit to the athletes at that time. And, the majority of the coaches at the table identified the lack of high performance planning and programming by Badminton BC over the past several years.
At the same time, Badminton Canada was refining its High Performance Plan to provide programming and services to our nation's elite Learning to Win (U23) and Training to Win (Open) athletes while starting to implement its LTAD model.
So, as our Committee became a smaller working group, we began to incorporate these objectives into our own plan:
• to work closely with Badminton Canada's high performance planning and LTAD model; and
• to provide opportunities to bring all of our top British Columbia athletes together at the Training to Train (U16), Training to Compete (U19), Learning to Win (U23), and Training to Win (Open) levels while allowing their individual coaches, clubs, and programs to be their continued base of operations for development.
Let me stress the second bullet again: The Badminton BC "Team BC - Training to Win" program is meant to support the individual athlete, his/her individual coach(es), and club by providing enhancement programs and services to our top athletes, where applicable, and opportunities to help build a cohesive group of Team BC athletes from wherever they are in the province. This program is not intended to create a separate training group from the one in which the athlete is already a participant, but simply to enhance and support the training experience of those athletes.
For example, should a selected athlete choose to join the program, he/she would be able to access a wide range of potential sport system programs and services like the Canadian Sport Centre - Pacific and PacificSport, potential funding opportunities through the Province of BC's Athlete Assistance Program or other athlete travel subsidies (budget permitting), and eligibility for selection to Team BC interprovincial team competitions like the annual Western Team Championships for our Training to Train (U16) athletes, the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games for our Training to Compete (U19) athletes, and the 2011 Canada Winter Games for our Training to Compete (U19) and our Learning to Win (U23) athletes.
There may also be some opportunities throughout the year to bring each stage of athlete together where they can access coaching by other Team BC coaches and other national/international coaches, spar with invited national/international athletes, and get to know their fellow athletes better--all essential to building a strong Team BC.
Next Steps
The High Performance Committee is in the process of inviting the athletes who met the criteria for the 'Team BC - Training to Win' program for 2009/2010. Letters are on their way to athletes now (with a copy to each athlete's identified coach, where applicable), and we hope to announce the final list of athletes in the program in late October.
From there, athletes and their personal coach would meet with one or more members of the Committee to discuss their participation in the program for the season. Part of this meeting would include signing an 'Athlete Agreement' outlining the obligations of both Badminton BC and the athlete, and a chance to ask questions and share information.
Also, you will soon see posted on the Badminton BC website the team selection criteria for the 2010 Western Team Championships and BC Athlete Assistance Program criteria for the 2009/2010 season. Application forms for the BC Athlete Assistance Program for 2009/2010 will be available shortly.
Later on this Fall, we will post the selection criteria for the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games and 2011 Canada Winter Games.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact the Committee should you have any questions or feedback.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work diligently to ensure the membership, our clubs, coaches, and athletes are kept up to date on our plans and activities.
We value each and every athlete, coach, club, volunteer, and member in our province, and look forward to working with you in the coming season.
Sincerely,
Chris Trenholme
VP - High Performance
High Performance Plan
July 18, 2009
Dear High Performance Players:
As promised, the Badminton BC High Performance Committee is committed to providing updates on our High Performance Plan (HPP) and “Team BC – Training to Win” Program for the 2009/10 season.
Currently, the HP Committee consists of the following members:
• Chris Trenholme, VP – High Performance, Chair
• Phil Weier, Technical Director, Badminton BC
• Ram Nayaar, Level 5 Coach, Badminton Canada National Coach, and Head Professional of Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club
• Keith Anton, Professional Coach, based in Victoria
Most recently, the Board of Badminton BC approved a motion confirming that Badminton Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) will form the foundation of all future programs and planning; this includes High Performance.
The HP Committee has developed a plan that incorporates Badminton Canada’s LTAD, and fully supports Badminton Canada’s High Performance Plan, with the goal of developing and supporting athletes in BC that will go on to be supported by Badminton Canada.
The “Team BC – Training to Win” program consists of selected high performance athletes that fall into four key stages of development in LTAD:
• Training to Win (T2W) – Open Category/U-23
• Learning to Win (L2W) – U-23
• Training to Compete (T2C) – U-19
• Training to Train (T2T) – U-16
To qualify for one of these stages in the program, athletes must have achieved the following, based on results from the 2008/09 competitive season:
T2W/L2W (Open/U-23)
• Quarterfinals or better at 2009 Senior or U-23 National Championships; or
• 2009 BC Closed Champion
T2C (U-19)
• Quarterfinals or better at 2009 U-19 National Championships; or
• Finalist or better at 2009 BC U-19 Championships
T2T (U-16)
• Quarterfinals or better at 2009 U-16 National Championships; or
• Semifinalist or better at 2009 BC U-16 Championships; or
• Finalist or better at 2009 U-14 National Championships; or
• 2009 BC U-14 Champion
Note: The Badminton BC High Performance Committee reserves the right to choose anyone else in the T2T (U-16) Stage, based on LTAD principles.
Once invited, athletes will be asked to sign an agreement with Badminton BC. The agreement outlines obligations that the athlete must fulfill, as well as the programs and services available to the athletes, as provided by Badminton BC and its partners. Some of these key opportunities and services provided to athletes include:
• Group Training amongst fellow athletes within your LTAD stage group on a weekly/monthly basis;
• Consultation with each athlete’s designated individual coach on annual planning and periodization;
• Access to sport science and other support services through Canadian Sport Centre – Pacific and PacificSport Centres throughout BC;
• Eligibility for consideration to receive BC Government Athlete Assistance Program funding (AAP);
• Eligibility for consideration to be selected to identified inter-provincial team competitions such as the 2010 Western Team Championships (T2T stage)
• Eligibility to be part of the pool of athletes for selection to Team BC for the 2011 Canada Winter Games (T2C/L2W) and 2011 Western Canada Summer Games (T2C).
• “Training to Win – Team BC” clothing;
• Eligibility for consideration to receive athlete travel subsidies to National Championships and other National Team/Jr. Team competition (budget permitting);
• Access to Christmas Holiday Team BC Training Camp led by our High Performance Coaches and invited international and national team athletes.
• Other services and opportunities as they come available.
It is up to each athlete whether he/she decides to join the program.
Stay tuned for more updates as the summer progresses.
Sincerely,
Chris Trenholme
