First, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous effort of our premium affiliated host venues and individuals who made recent updates and successes possible:

  • Kudos to VLT and VRC: A sincere thank you to the team at VLT for working diligently with BCAN to advocate for the inclusion of the U19 category in the upcoming BC Junior Elite. We also appreciate BCAN's flexibility and willingness to address our members’ and coaches’ and PSO’s concerns.
  • Tournament Highlights: Congratulations to Simar and his team for hosting a seamless and successful BC Junior Elite tournament across two venues. We also extend our gratitude to Graeme and his team for delivering a fantastic Victoria Junior A event.

Responses to Members’ Questions:

BC Junior Elite

Q: Has the U19 age category been added back into the BC Junior Elite taking place in February?
A: YES! The U19 age category has been confirmed for the BC Junior Elite in February. This news has been confirmed by BCAN, and it is a great news for BC athletes. This was made possible through a concerted effort to secure extra court time at VRC. Thank you to VLT our host venue and everyone who played a part in this success.

 Junior A Draw Sizes

Q: What is the plan for Junior A tournaments in 2025? Will the draw sizes and consolation formats remain the same?
A: For the two remaining Junior A tournaments this season (Wings Junior A and the BC Junior A Provincials), the draw sizes will remain capped at 16/16/8/8/8. If an event does not reach its cap, spaces may be reallocated to other events with preference given to those with the most registrants.

We are exploring venues with greater capacity for the BC Junior A Provincials to potentially increase draw sizes. Efforts will also be made to continue offering full-match consolations, though this remains dependent on court availability.

Junior B Entry

Q: Will there be a merit-based entry system for Junior B tournaments to prevent registration stress?
A: Unfortunately, it is not possible to begin to Merit-base entries for Junior Challenger tournaments in the middle of the season.

We are keen to work out Merit-based system starting next season along with adding Junior C (and Junior D?).

To address immediate concerns, for the next two Junior Challengers (Wings and Kelowna), we will implement draw size capacities instead of overall participant caps. This should help reduce registration-related stress and ensure a smoother process.

We will also reach out to the community for input on shaping the Junior C tournaments and refining next season's Junior A and B formats.

Junior B Eligibility

Q: Can eligibility criteria be adjusted to prevent A-level players ranked lower than 8th from playing in B tournaments?
A: We agree with the suggestion to raise the ineligibility threshold for singles in Junior Challenger tournaments from Top 8 to Top 16. However, for doubles and mixed doubles, the threshold will remain at Top 8.

We are committed to addressing your concerns and continuing to improve the tournament experience for all participants. Thank you for your ongoing support and feedback as we work to strengthen badminton in BC.

HIGH PERFORMANCE NEWS

Dear High-Performance Players and Coaches,

We would like to provide an update regarding the CSIP program, and the benefits associated with your Badminton BC membership and performance.

CSIP is undergoing system changes this year, which have led to enrolment issues affecting many members.

According to CSIP - Quote:

Quote from CSIP "All individuals who have completed the Enrolment (Waiver) will receive a card without a headshot shortly. This card can be used in the interim but will expire on February 14th. On January 31st, we will transition everyone to the new digital passport, which should eliminate the previous issues we have been having."

For those who have successfully followed the enrolment process, your interim card will work, and your benefits will continue as normal. Please check your junk/spam mail for the card to be sent to you by CSIP in the next few weeks. Our High-Performance department has been working closely with CSIP on a weekly basis to resolve the ongoing bugs and system errors to ensure a seamless experience for all our members.

BC WINTER GAMES 2026

The cities of Trail and Rossland are teaming up to host the 2026 BC Winter Games from February 25 to March 1, 2026. Selkirk College in Castlegar will serve as the venue for badminton.

Zone Trials

Zone trials will take place between October and December 7, 2025, to select 4 boys and 4 girls from each zone. These trials must not conflict with any Badminton BC Junior A or B tournaments. Athletes born in 2012 are eligible to participate.

Players who meet any of the following criteria are not eligible:

  • Ranked in the top eight (8) of any U15 events.
  • Competed in the 2025 Canadian Junior National Championships.
  • Represented Canada in the 2025 Pan-American Junior National Championships.
  • An updated badminton technical package will be published in February 2025.

Funding for Zone Trials

Funding assistance for zone trials is available through BC Gaming. To qualify, hosting clubs must apply by May 1, 2025, through the Provincial Sport Advisor.

Coach and Official Development

The BC Winter Games is also an opportunity for coach and technical official development. Head coaches and assistant coaches are needed in the following zones: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8.

Interested coaches should review the certification eligibility requirements on the Badminton BC website. For inquiries, please contact Badminton BC Technical Programs at technicalprograms@badmintonbc.com

Meeting Core Sport Requirements

For badminton to remain a core sport in the 2028 BC Winter Games, a minimum of 6 zones must participate in the 2026 Games. It is essential for clubs to organize trials and encourage player participation.

Currently, there are no teams in Zone 1 (Kootenays)—the host region—or Zone 7 (North-West). During the Lhatko Quesnel Games, we met the minimum requirement of 6 zones, though Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) faced challenges with only 3 participants. Additional players from other zones helped fill the team.

Let’s start early, reach out, and ensure badminton continues as a core sport for the 2028 BC Winter Games in Kamloops!

OTHER NEWS

Remembering Erica Lee

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Erica Lee, one of Badminton BC’s esteemed officials. Erica recently achieved her National Level Umpiring status, a testament to her incredible dedication and love for the sport.

Erica was more than an official—she was a kind soul who touched the lives of many in our community. Her positive energy was evident at countless matches where she officiated with integrity, professionalism, and grace.

Because of her courageous battle with cancer, Erica’s spirit remained an inspiration to all who knew her. Her contributions to badminton and the impact she made on our community will not be forgotten.

She will be deeply missed.

Accounting:

We want to inform our members that the change of signers for board authorization signatures is taking longer than anticipated. We sincerely apologize for the delay in processing and releasing outstanding payments. Please rest assured that we are working diligently to finalize this process and expect the new signers to be fully operational by next week. Once this is complete, all outstanding payments will be promptly addressed.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during this transition.

KIDSPORT CONCEPT

The KidSport concept was launched in 1993 by board and staff at Sport BC as a way to help address the challenges faced by many families when registering their children in organized sport. From a modest start in that first year, issuing $35,000 in grants, KidSport has grown exponentially across the country and has become a truly national entity with 11 provincial/territorial chapters and over 180 community chapters.

Because the KidSport program starts at a local, provincial or territorial chapter, the impact of funding directly shapes sport in local communities. Each chapter—most of which are completely volunteer-run—raises funds, accepts applications, and distributes grants in its own community.

From humble beginnings, KidSport BC, inclusive of our 40 community chapters, has issued more than $17 million in grants to over 70,400 kids since 1993, including $1.3 million in grants to 4164 kids in 2021.

Today, our mission remains the same…to remove the financial barriers that prevent some children from playing organized sport #SoALLKidsCanPlay!
