Public Statement from the Badminton BC Board of Directors

Addressing Recent Rumors and Support for Our Executive Director (ED)
We first like to take this opportunity to address and clarify rumors regarding the performance and background of our Executive Director (ED). As a Board, we are fully aware of her past legal history and have carefully considered this in our decision-making. According to our by-law S.11, we have reviewed all factors and decided to continue supporting her in her current role. We have full confidence in her leadership, and we believe her contributions have significantly strengthened the organization.

Operational Excellence and Financial Recovery
When our ED first took her role, Badminton BC was in a difficult financial position. In 2017, the organization faced a deficit of $13,181, followed by a deficit of $7,773 in 2018, and a $10,732 bank overdraft. Under her leadership, Badminton BC has since achieved a financially healthy state. Over $1.51 million in grants and funding has been secured, with an additional $54,000 raised through successful fundraising efforts. The organization's financial turnaround is clearly reflected in our audited financial statements, which show we are now in a positive financial position.

Independent Auditor's Report
Our financial operations are overseen by an Independent Auditor's Report, which consistently confirms our compliance with the Societies Act. The audit goes beyond the required standards, and all findings are fully transparent, approved by members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). This external review further solidifies our position as a fiscally responsible and well-managed organization.

Strong Internal Checks and Balances
We have also implemented robust systems of checks and balances. All financial transactions, reports, and audits are thoroughly reviewed at four different levels to ensure accountability. Our financial audits have consistently returned positive results, highlighting the effectiveness of these systems.

ED Compensation and Transparency
Regarding the ED’s salary, we conducted a thorough market analysis and determined that her compensation which is $103K is at the lower end compared to similar positions in the non-profit sector. This salary, as well as all adjustments, has been fully transparent in the financial statement in accordance with the Society’s Act. Moving forward, we will continue to ensure fairness by engaging a third-party consultant to review staff and contractor compensation, and there might be adjustment needed to be made from the recommendations.

Addressing Misinformation and Harmful Behavior
We would like to clarify that spreading false information about an individual or the organization constitutes slander, and distributing such information in written form is considered libel. These unfounded rumors are not only damaging but also harmful to the organization's progress. Badminton BC will not tolerate bullying, harassment, or abusive treatment toward our Board members or staff. Further spreading of misinformation or abusive behavior will be treated seriously, and appropriate actions, including legal measures, may be taken.

We also want to confirm that to the best of our knowledge, the ED holds only one full-time position with Badminton BC, contrary to some of the claims being circulated. Furthermore, every grant application and financial report is subject to rigorous oversight. Every thorough investigation we have made indicates that no grant funds have been used for improper purposes, and all contractors associated with the organization operate under legitimate contracts, which are audited for compliance.

A Commitment to Rehabilitation and Inclusion
Our society values rehabilitation and the opportunity for second chances. By providing individuals with the opportunity to rebuild and grow, we not only benefit them but also create stronger, more inclusive communities. Our ED’s work is a testament to the positive outcomes that arise when individuals are given the chance to contribute meaningfully. We believe in supporting people in their journeys and fostering an environment of inclusion.

Moving Forward
The Board believes that as an organization, we need to come together and focus on the journey ahead.  Our excellent financial position presents an opportunity to grow and find even more ways to serve our members and further the sport we all love.  We are always open to feedback and suggestions.

Conclusion

Under the ED’s leadership and with the collective efforts of the Board, staff, and contractors, Badminton BC is now on a stronger financial and operational foundation. We remain committed to transparency, integrity, and accountability in all that we do. We will continue to uphold these values as we move forward, and we thank you for your ongoing trust and support.

Important Information - Anticipated Shuttle Shortage

Dear Badminton Community,

We have recently received important information from our long-time supporter and sponsor, Victor Racquets Canada, regarding an anticipated shuttle shortage in the coming months. This shortage is due to several factors, including supply chain challenges in duck and goose farming. Additionally, an increased demand for shuttles in China and India, rising feed costs, avian influenza outbreaks, and adverse weather conditions have all exacerbated the issue.

The reduced availability of goose feathers, particularly due to farmers shortening the growth cycle of geese, is expected to lead to a significant price increase for shuttles across all brands. Unfortunately, this will make it difficult to meet demand as shuttle supplies will be lower than usual, and the prices for each new shipment will likely continue to rise as the year progresses.

To prevent potential disruptions to our tournament circuit and long lead times (with estimated delivery times possibly extending to 8 weeks or more), Badminton BC is organizing a bulk order for Victor Blue (Junior B) and Victor Green Champion One feather shuttles. We encourage our affiliated clubs to consider pre-ordering now to mitigate the risk of shortages.

As your provincial sport organization (PSO), our goal is to ensure that our clubs and members have access to quality shuttles throughout the season while keeping costs as manageable as possible. We are extending a special bulk order offer for affiliated club members, with a minimum order of 100 tubes per club to qualify for the discounted pricing through our PSO connection.

Please let Badminton BC know if you are interested in participating in this bulk purchase by replying no later than October 2nd 2024, to secure your club’s order and benefit from bulk pricing.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and are here to help ensure the continued success of badminton in our community, despite these challenging times.

Sincerely,
Badminton BC

BC Junior Tournaments - October 2024 Update

The purpose of this letter is:
• to review some of the changes that have been implemented for the Junior A Series
• to outline further changes for the Junior A & Junior B Series
• to address some common questions that have been raised

Background Information
In recent seasons, tournaments have been filling up faster than ever before. To meet the demand, in some instances, Host Organizing Committees (HOCs) have accepted more entries than their venues can accommodate and/or have put entry limits in terms of numbers.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in long delays in the overall tournament and some top-ranked players not being able to register for tournaments.

TRAINING: Right to Be’s Bystander Intervention in Sport

Right to Be’s Bystander Intervention in Sport sessions are coming up, and there are four dates to choose from.

The training is a great tool to gain practical skills to prevent harm in your sport. The virtual delivery lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and NCCP professional development points are available for participants.

This opportunity is open to everyone, including officials, coaches, parents, and athletes at club and provincial level!

Registration links:

Description of training:

“Safety in sport means environments on and off the field, offices, and boardrooms are all physically safe, while being inclusive, psychologically and culturally safe. To contribute to a positive culture, we can all improve our communication skills, and also feel empowered to do something when conflict arises.

We all have a responsibility to creating a safe environment, but often we don’t know what to do when faced with a situation that may compromise our own safety. Bystander intervention gives individuals tools to intervene the next time they witness harmful behaviour in the sports community. The training will equip you with the five strategies for intervention so you leave feeling more prepared to successfully and safely intervene.

When we intervene, we don’t just minimize the impact on the person being harmed. We also start to shift the culture towards that prioritizes respectful sport experiences that are safe for everyone. Alone we can’t shift the culture — but together — our actions matter.”
