BC Player Eligibility Criteria and Policy for 

BC Provincial Championships and Canadian National Championships

 

Due to the uncertainty of competition and hosting competitions this 2021-2022 season Badminton BC Competitions Committee has reduced the requirements for player eligibility into Provincial Championships.  

For BC Series events the following summarizes the eligibility criteria for provincial and national championship participation 

 

Event Participation

Junior A (U13/U15/U17/U19)

  • Play a minimum of 50% of the Junior A Series to be eligible to play in BC Junior A Provincial Championship
  • ****Exception for 2021-2022 season only, players will only have to play a minimum of one (1) Junior A Series event to be eligible to play in BC Junior A Provincial Championship *****
  • BC Junior Elite will be considered as part of the Junior A Series 
  • Must play the BC Junior A Provincial Championship to be eligible for the Badminton Canada U23/Junior National Championship

Please note: only BC athletes are eligible to play in the BC Provincial Championship.

Eligibility list will be published on Badminton BC website 2 weeks following the last schedule series event.

Reminder that applications for exemption must be submitted to Badminton BC within 15 days of the Provincials entry deadline and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 

   

U11 

  • Play a minimum of 3 events that can be combined between Junior A and Junior B Series events to be eligible to participate in U11 Junior Provincials
  • **** Exception for 2021-2022 season only, players will only have to play a minimum of one (1) BC Junior A or BC Junior B series event to be eligible to participate in U11 Junior Provincials ****
  • U11 has only one Provincial Championship

Eligibility list will be published on Badminton BC website 2 weeks following the last schedule series event.

Reminder that applications for exemption must be submitted to Badminton BC within 15 days of the Provincials entry deadline and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Junior B (U13/U15/U17/U19)

Play a minimum of 3 Junior B Series events, preferably within their region, to be eligible to participate in Junior B Provincials

****Exception for 2021-2022 season only, all athletes are welcome to play in the 2022 BC Junior B Provincial Championship as long as you are not in the Top 8 BC Junior Ranking for the age group of U15/U17/U19 in any events.*****

Please note: only BC athletes are eligible to play in the BC Provincial Championship.

 

       INELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS

       Players are ineligible to play Junior B Provincials for one or more of the reasons below:

  1. Those players who are ranked in the Top 8 BC Junior Ranking within the age group of U15/U17/U19 in any event will not be eligible to participate.

 

 

       Eligibility list will be published on Badminton BC website 2 weeks following the last schedule series event.

       Reminder that applications for exemption must be submitted to Badminton BC within 15 days of the  
       Provincials entry deadline and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 

U23 & Open 

  • Play any one (1) of the following to be eligible to participate in U23 or Open Provincial Championships: 
  • ****Exception for 2021-2022 season only, all athletes are welcome to play in the 2022 BC U23 or Open Provincial Championship *****
    • BC U23 series event
    • BC Open series event
    • BC Elite Series
  • Play BC U23 Provincial Championship to be eligible for U23 National Championship

Please note: only BC athletes are eligible to play in the BC Provincial Championship.

For 2021-2022 season and onwards play the season’s year BC Open Provincial Championships to be eligible for the Senior National Championship

Eligibility list will be published on Badminton BC website 2 weeks following the last schedule series event.

Reminder that applications for exemption must be submitted to Badminton BC within 15 days of the Provincials entry deadline and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Masters

There is no event participation criteria to be eligible to participate in BC Masters Provincials or National Championships

 

Age Eligibility

For the 2021-2022 Season:

AGE GROUPS
Age groups for participants for the 2021-2022 season are determined by the criteria below:
▪ U19 (born in 2004 or later)-Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 19 years of age throughout the 2022 calendar year in which the National Championships are held.
▪ U17 (born in 2006 or later)-Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 17 years of age throughout the 2022 calendar year in which the National Championships are held.
▪ U15 (born in 2008 or later)-Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 15 years of age throughout the 2022 calendar year in which the National Championships are held.
▪ U13 (born in 2010 or later)-Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 13 years of age throughout the 2022 calendar year in which the Provincial Championships are held.

▪ U11 (born in 2012 or later)-Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 11 years of age throughout the 2022 calendar year in which the Provincial Championships are held. 

 

 


Citizenship

Citizenship requirements to participate in BC U23 & Junior A Provincial Championship are:

  1. Permanent Residency (PR) card must be dated 1-year from the start of the U23 & BC Junior A Provincial Championship
  2. In the period between the issuing of the PR card and the U23 & BC Junior A Provincial Championship the athlete must participate in two (2) of the Junior A  series events
  3. In the period between the issuing of the PR card and the BC Junior A Provincial Championship the athlete must participate in one Junior Elite Series event

Note: No Citizenship requirements to participate in Open Provincials.

Uniforms
All athletes and coaches participating in any sanctioned Badminton BC Provincial Championship will be restricted to having uniforms only personalized with their NAME and/or CLUB/PROVINCE on their competitive clothing. The athlete clothing is not required to have any indicators on their competitive uniforms.

 

Exemption Policy

The following exemption policies were created in consultation with Badminton BC’s current Competitions and High Performance Committees, and apply to all ages/categories of competition where Badminton BC maintains a participation based eligibility criteria.

Application Process
The Badminton BC Competitions Committee will consider all exemption requests on a case-by-case basis. Requests must be submitted by email to info@badmintonbc.com from the athlete’s coach of record at least 15 days prior to an event entry deadline. The request must provide the reason that an exemption is requested as well as any documentation to support the request. Both the coach and athlete must be current members in good standing with Badminton BC.

Types of Exemption

Scheduling
In the event of a direct conflict in scheduling between a Provincial ranking event and a National or International ranking event of the same age/category relevance, the athlete’s participation in either event can be considered towards their participation based eligibility criteria.

Athlete Out of Province
In the event that an athlete is temporarily studying, training, or living out of Province, participation in an equal number of age relevant National Series events can be considered towards their participation based eligibility criteria. Only under special circumstances will this exemption be provided for a Provincial Championship.

Athlete Out of Country
In the event that an athlete is temporarily studying, training, or living out of country, participation in an equal number of age relevant local events can be considered towards their participation based eligibility criteria. Only under special circumstances will this exemption be provided for a Provincial Championship.

Injury
In the event that an injury prevents an athlete from participating in a competition, provision of a doctor’s, physiotherapist’s, or chiropractor’s note clearly identifying the injury, the recommendation to avoid competition, and the suggested length of treatment/recovery can be considered towards their participation based eligibility criteria.
