Athletes gear up for 2015 Black Knight BC Junior and Senior Provincial Championships

The stage is set for the 2015 Black Knight BC Junior and Senior Provincial Championships, taking place April 16 to 19 at Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC.

The host committee has been hard at work ensuring the highest standards of event delivery are met for Badminton BC’s premier championship. In support of these efforts, Black Knight will return as the Provincials’ title sponsor for the third year in a row. Their valued partnership has once again played a key role in building a successful championship to showcase British Columbia’s rising badminton stars.

Nearly all of Team BC are returning from their excellent showing at the Canada Winter Games to claim a title in the Provincials. James Ho, who surprised the nation as one of the few unseeded athletes to medal at the event in February, will be a big contender for gold in his age group. Joshua Liu, who snagged a bronze in Men’s Doubles, will also be a key athlete to watch from the Team BC program. Team BC’s top female athlete Qingzi Ouyang is poised for a podium finish at the Provincials as well. She earned two triple crowns in Elite Series events this year, and had an inspiring performance at the Canada Winter Games, finishing fourth overall in Women’s Singles.

An astounding 100% of Team BC athletes from the Western Canadian Team Championships are participating in the Provincials – a true testament to Badminton BC’s renewed efforts to engage and develop young athletes on the high performance pathway this season. Annie Chow, Wenjun Ouyang, Stephenie Ho, and Clarence Liu are expected to perform particularly well at this year’s Provincials, given the high ranking they earned with their spectacular showing at the WCTC tournament in January.

Returning to compete in the Provincials on the highest level of competition are BC’s four National Team members: Phyllis Chan, Adrian Liu, Derrick Ng and Toby Ng. Fresh from competing at the Commonwealth Games, the Pan Am Badminton Championships, and earning a slew of international titles, these four athletes are gearing up for an important Olympic Qualifying year. Any one of their matches at the Provincials is sure to be a real treat to watch.

New badminton fans and first time spectators are invited to take in all the action at Ace Badminton Centre. Come witness the very best badminton our province has to offer when matches begin Thursday afternoon! Cheering is encouraged, as are well wishes for BC’s promising young athletes as they endeavour to win the title and move on to the Canadian National Championships in Winnipeg later this month.
