Badminton BC Announces New Board of Directors

BADMINTON BC ANNOUNCES 2107-2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SURREY, BC -  Badminton BC concluded its Annual General meeting on September 27th by announcing its 2017-2018 Board of Directors.  The meeting was held at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club in Vancouver.  New faces and returning directors were elected at Annual General Meeting continuiing the Goals of Growth for the Sport.

President of the Westlu Badminton Club and Transport Canada Engineer, Henry Wong (Richmond), will assume the President’s role and carry some of the larger Committee efforts in the coming year focused on judicial matters, governance, revenue generating strategies and official’s development.   His expertise in risk management will support well the association’s 2017-2020 strategic direction and on-going efforts for continuous improvement at Badminton BC.

Current Treasurer and avid master’s player, Dennis Brown (Vancouver) will continue his role as Treasurer of Badminton BC bringing his extensive business and financial management experience and assisting Badminton BC in its revenue generation strategies.

Andrew Tsang (Burnaby) is an IT consultant with valuable experience in business development, quality assurance, strategy and policy development.  He will serve Badminton BC as the Vice President and contribute to the association goals in Excellence (Performance) , marketing and communications, and finance and audit.  Andrew will also be called upon to assist Badminton BC in orchestrating the invaluable parent’s role in the association’s fundraising and technology strategy, and a key player in the digital transformation project of Badminton BC over the next strategic period.

Bringing to Badminton BC his sharp business acumen and guiding the association’s pursuit of best in class risk management practices, Pedro Catalan (New Westminster) will join the leadership team as the Secretary. Pedro will be key in transitioning Badminton BC to meet the compliances of the new BC Societies Act and to guide revenue generation strategies towards its financial goals.

Applying her vast not for profit Board experience and legal background in immigration and citizenship,  Bonnie Teng (Vancouver)  will join the leadership team as Director at Large and support the Badminton BC mission in a variety of roles including governance and general oversight

Daisy Lee (Delta) enters the final year of her term as a Director at Large.  In 2017-2018 she will lead the Awards and Recognition Committee in honouring the many athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers of the association, and nominating those for provincial, and national recognition.

Reflecting on this past year, Henry Wong speaks to the goal of continued improvement and professionalization of the organization. “The previous strategic direction was focused on event hosting strategy. Still important, Badminton BC has needed to refocus its strategies on rebuilding the foundations of its purpose as a member based organization – organizational readiness, sport for all (participation), excellence (performance) and coaches and officials with an emphasis on growing the sport, and building partnerships to sustain itself for the future.”

At the end of the meeting, Badminton BC bid farewell and thanked to those who served the organization over the past year, Dawn McGuire Reeves (Gabriola) in July, Colleen Van Mook (Prince George) in April, and many of its committee volunteers – Lisa Davison and Reesa Valenta (ARC) in July, and departing staff – Alvin Lau (Sport Development).  The organization looks forward to engaging more new faces in the coming year.
